Program Description

The UCO College of Mathematics and Science now offers a B.S. in Science Education with five degree options.  All five options share a 'common core' of science courses.  The Biology, Chemistry, and Physics options are almost identical to the respective degrees offered in the past.  Each was designed to educate specialists in the respective areas.  The two new options, Physical Science and General Science, are 'hybrids' of the Biology, Chemistry, and Physics options.  These five new degree options (as well as course descriptions for all courses offered by UCO) are detailed in the UCO online catalogs.

The professional teacher education component of the B.S. in Science Education degree includes 31 semester hours in 10 courses, three of which include field experiences. This sequence of course work and related experiences has been designed to direct pre-service teachers toward mastery of the Oklahoma State Department of Education General Competencies for Licensure and Certification as well as meet the Standards for Oklahoma Accredited Teacher Education Programs.

Students are encouraged to begin taking science coursework early in their program, along with general education coursework.  Students are also encouraged to apply for admission to Professional Teacher Education upon completion of 40 hours of coursework and successful completion of the Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET).  Student Teaching is usually completed the last semester prior to graduation.
