REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO STUDENT TEACHING

• ADMISSION TO PROFESSIONAL TEACHER EDUCATION
  • Formal, written admission stating all requirements have been met.

   

• MAINTAIN MINIMUM GPA of 2.75 ( 2.5 for continuously enrolled students that initially enrolled prior to Fall 2000 as entering freshmen, transfer students, or degreed students seeking certification) in:
  • Professional Teacher Education Courses

  • NOTE:  If your overall GPA is less than the above designated minimum, you may qualify for admission if you meet the following criteria:

    a. You have not attended any higher education institution for the past 5 years AND

    b. You have completed a minimum of 30 semester hours with a GPA of 3.00 since returning to school; half of these 30 hours must be required courses in your area of specialization.

  • Major Courses (Science and Support Courses) 
  • Overall GPA

   

• NO GRADE BELOW "C"  
  • All Professional Teacher Education (PTE) coursework 
  • Major coursework (if taken after August 15, 1990)

• PROFESSIONAL SEQUENCE COURSEWORK - Successful completion of
  • TCHED 3023 Foundations of American Education - including the (30 hour) classroom observation component.
  • TCHED 4533 Educational Psychology - including the (30 hour) classroom observation component

• METHODS COURSEWORK - Successful completion of BIO 4853 General Methods of Teaching Science

• PORTFOLIO - Meet current Portfolio requirements

• FOREIGN LANGUAGE - The following students must meet the Foreign Language Proficiency Requirement (novice-high level).
  • students admitted to an Oklahoma college or university as a freshman Fall 1997 or later
  • out-of-state students transferring to an Oklahoma college or university Fall 1997 or later
  • students not continuously enrolled in an Oklahoma college or university since prior to Fall 1997
  • degreed candidates seeking initial certification 

  The requirement can be met in one of the following ways:

  • complete two or more years of the same foreign language in high school with a grade of B or higher
  • pass CLEP test in a foreign language
  • demonstrate "native speaker" competency through a free interview in the Modern Languages department
  • complete a UCO college course in a foreign language (FRNCH 1114, GERMN 1114, OR SPAN 1114) with a grade of "C" or better
  • complete foreign language course work at another institution and submit a syllabus and transcript indicating that a grade of "C" or higher indicates novice-high level competency
  • complete SLPTH 4912 Sign Language for the Classroom or a comparable college level course with a grade of "C" or better
  • demonstrate competency in a Native American language.

  Verification of the Foreign Language Requirement in the Portfolio must be submitted along with the application for student teaching.  See the chair of the Modern Languages Department, Thatcher Hall 202, 974-5647 or the chair of the Special Services Department (for sign language), Old North 109E, 974-5714 for additional information and verification signatures.

• OSAT - Successful completion of the OSAT(s) (Oklahoma Subject Area Exam) for all areas in which you desire to do your student teaching.

• Approval by the Science Education Advisor.

• FORMAL APPROVAL by the Council on Teacher Education.
