What Are You Looking For in a Job/Career?

More than likely, no single job will provide the best of all these characteristics but it is worth thinking about the trade-offs you are willing to make for your career.  In the February 1992 issue of Money magazine, the editors reported the results of their study of the best and worst jobs in America.  They ranked different jobs according to the four factors above and Biologists ranked number 1!  In general, the sciences ranked high but nearly all of the  career options for students in biology were ranked in the top 50 jobs (see the table below) and show excellent potential for growth for the 14 years (from 1992).  This is no small way due to the addition of molecular biology to biology and the growth of the health industry.  Not only are there new opportunities in molecular biology and the health industry but, the integration of molecular biology into basic science has also "juiced up" the traditional fields of biology.

Table 1  Money magazine's job rankings from the February 1992 issue.  Earnings are 90th percentile earnings.
