PODIATRIC MEDICINE
General Information:
A Doctor of
Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.) specializes in the prevention,
diagnosis, and treatment, through both medical and surgical
means, or diseases and disorders affecting the human foot. A
D.P.M. makes independent judgments, administers treatment,
prescribes medication, and when necessary, performs surgery.
As new
scientific and medical advances are made, podiatric medicine
grows more and more diverse. In addition to general and
preventive podiatric medicine, podiatric physicians may be
certified in these specialties: Orthopedics/Biomechanics,
Podiatric Surgery, and Public Health. The podiatric physician may
develop a special focus in the following areas: Podiatric
Medicine, Podopediatrics, Podogeriatrics, and Podiatric Sports
Medicine.
Students of
podiatric medicine engage in a rigorous four-year course of
professional study. The first two years of the program are
largely devoted to classroom instruction and laboratory work in
the basic medical sciences: anatomy, physiology, microbiology,
biochemistry, pharmacology and pathology. During the third and
fourth years, students concentrate on courses in the clinical
sciences, gaining experience in the college clinics, community
clinics, accredited hospitals and office settings of podiatric
physicians.
Following
pre-doctoral education and training, Doctors of Podiatric
Medicine enter into a one to three year residency program or a
12-month preceptorship.
